How to Get People to Answer Your Call
The first step of any auction is getting someone to actually take your call. The play a trick on is to become the kind of person that people savour speaking with. Sales guru Tom Searcy explains how.
I dearest Jean. She's a salesperson extraordinaire employed by one of my great clients. Every call or email from her is a double shot of espresso to my spirit. We all have a Jean in our lives--the opposite of the "soul sucking oxygen vampires" I wrote most in a recent post. They requite so much more than they accept--and that's why her call gets answered or returned no matter where I am or what I am doing. And I'thou non the only one. Jean usually gets responses from whomever she contacts. Her approach is simple, simply information technology is so effective. Over the form of dozens of contacts, I recall I accept figured out why. Here are the things Jean does well:
- Set fourth dimension expectations--"Practise you accept just 3 minutes for a quick i, I actually demand your assist on this." Now I know information technology won't be three minutes, merely I do know that I can tell her I'm slammed and need to connect later on, or I tin accept the call always being able to tell Jean that we have to wrap it up.
- Re-connect start and fast--Every call starts with an "I was thinking of you the other mean solar day when I was at..." and a very curt story putting me in the picture with Jean.
- Give before you ask--She and then gives me a boost to my spirit, "Something y'all said in the by stuck in my mind, and information technology was....." and then she tells me why it was important and helpful. A compliment, genuinely given, is always a boost.
- Know what you want specifically--Here's where Jean gets what she wants. "I am trying to figure out what to practise... I could exercise this, that, or the other thing" is generally how the ask goes with the finishing point, "What exercise you remember I should do?" These requests are always specific and a selection from options. I may cull to generate other options based upon what she has told me, merely the conversation is e'er tighter because we are choosing rather than brainstorming.
- Thank and exit--She finishes with "That's exactly what I needed. Thanks for taking the call. It really helps."
- Shut the loop--I always get an email in a day or two thanking me for the fourth dimension and telling me the result.
Like I said, unproblematic and effective. Top executives, busy buyers, and your boss all desire to take calls from people similar Jean because they know what they are getting and they like it. Your ask may exist for an intervention on a problem, assistance in connecting with someone, or insight on a claiming. Information technology doesn't matter.
A couple of cautions:
- Plan before you call. Starting with the stop in mind keeps your call tight.
- Be positive. The telephone call that gets answered comes from a person who lifts your mean solar day, not weighs it down.
- Elementary and fast, not complex. If your event is circuitous, then write it up and send it. Employ your phone call as a way to allow the person know it is coming. You can still make the ask in the call of what you desire the other person to consider, just don't spell out all of the details. If you are seen every bit that person, then your call goes to voicemail.
- Gratitude is the attitude. Y'all want to let the person know your appreciation. Express your gratitude and so that the person feels valued.
Developing relationships through regular contacts in this way is not bad and you go the caller who gets answered.
